The final poll numbers show that President Obama has far more electoral votes locked up than required for victory on November 6. Many Republicans, already unenthusiastic with Mitt Romney, have decided to stay home this election cycle as a protest measure.
Romney was not the first choice for a large majority of regular and Tea Party Republicans. Many party regulars expressed outright disdain during the primaries. However, as the pimaries progressed, the SuperPACs that funded Romney prevailed as the other candidates dropped out due to inadequate funding. The choices of the most fervent party members disappeared, their voices were muffled, and they were forced to settle. The irony of the Citizens United decision of a conservative Supreme Court is that it was the conservative Republicans who would be defeated by unlimited spending.
The surprise of 2012 is that the members of the "grass roots" Tea Party uprising, fueled by the Koch brothers and promoted by GOP-aligned Fox News, was deserted by both. Mitt Romney was selected and promoted by the rich. They won the primary for their candidate, but neither they nor the Republican people will see their choice become president.
