Conservatism doesn’t seem to be working as advertised by the ‘trickle down’ theory that Reagan expounded on so long ago. We were supposed to have it all, get something for nothing – we won’t collect enough taxes to pay for the budget, especially from rich people and corporations, and that would cause business to become so successful that they would pay more taxes later. Well, now it’s later, a lot later. Decades have passed, and what do we have to show for it? We have a huge national deficit. And guess what, during that time the economy crashed and jobs were lost.
By any measure you use, ‘trickle down’ has been a bust.
The conservative Republicans haven’t bothered to check up on how successful ol’ trickle down has been. So they’ve continued to pound the drums and repeat the mantra… “lower taxes”… “lower taxes”… Quick, somebody send them the financial pages of newspapers from the last 3 or 4 decades!
Since people have become disenchanted with trickle down’s failure, maybe the conservatives can keep the notion alive by renaming it. ‘Trickle down’ sounded like rich people and business managers were standing over us and… well, getting us a little damp. Maybe the slogan was meant to express what they thought of us poor gullible suckers.
So how about naming it something a little stronger this time around? ‘Plop down’ sounds about right. If plan Number 1 didn’t work, maybe they could hit us with Number 2.
‘Plop down’ works like this: Nobody pays enough taxes to cover the budget. Instead, the richest people and the largest corporations, those who give the most to Congressmen, will have their taxes reduced. But wait, there’s more! We’ll spend a lot more money on the military too! It sounds like we’re in the hole here, but remember, like ‘trickle down’, ‘plop down’ is counterintuitive. All we have to do is wait another 3 decades and this time (I swear I mean it this time!), corporations will so fabulously profitable and providing so many jobs, that they’ll practically be dumping cash into the tax coffers. Just wait and see!
And in the meantime, we really don’t need to keep maintaining the infrastructure. And what about those social programs? They were all an ill-conceived mistake. They’re gone, history. From now on nobody gets nothin’. You’re all on your own, and that includes you granny, however old and sick you are.
Plop, plop, plop… Duck! It’s already working!
