I made a startling discovery the other day. I wanted to become more productive, to achieve the goals I set out to do, and to improve my life in several ways. So I analyzed the problems, came up with solutions, and wrote everything down. Now comes the hard part: How to follow through? To accomplish goals, a person has to do some hard work on a continuous basis. And let's face it, we all have good intentions, we WANT to do great things, but it's hard work to actually DO them.
So I had a thought. Hypnosis should work. But I didn't want to spend the money to visit a hypnotist, and I didn't know how long the effects would last. Would it be worth it? But I had heard of self hypnosis, and it is free. So I searched the Internet. I found a WIKI site that gave some good suggestions: http://www.wikihow.com/Perform-Self-Hypnosis. I read the article. It said that I could hypnotize myself. And what's more, I also read that ALL hypnosis is essentially self hypnosis! Hypnosis basically means that a person relaxes his mind and body, then introduces suggestions. So I came up with the suggestions that I wanted for my life. I followed WIKI's method for self hypnosis, and repeated my suggestions.
It worked! I had banished a lot of unwanted emotions, negative feelings, and useless stray thoughts from my mind. I felt less anxious and more relaxed. And best of all, I was fully focused on my goals. I worked well that day and accomplished a good days work.
After that I has a revelation. All of the self help gurus like Tony Robbins and all of the self help books that people have written offer solutions that are similar to self hypnosis. They follow the same formula: You determine what your goals are. You decide that you really WANT to attain them and that completing them makes you happy. You convince yourself that you are capable of accomplishing them. And you convince yourself that you will work hard to complete your goals. If you go to a self help seminar, the leader tells you this stuff, you do your part, then there is some good old fashioned cheer leading that motivates you. You go home, go to work, and you actually do better -- but only for a while. Then it begins to wear off.
Self hypnosis is the same as self help. You do all of the things you do at a self help seminar or what you do when you read a self help book. But there is BIG improvement in on very crucial area. You can MAINTAIN the beneficial effect. You can avoid having the effect wear off because you can do self hypnosis every day. So you constantly reinforce it. And it only takes 5 minutes. (At least for me, you can take a little longer if you like.)
I also see a parallel between self hypnosis and meditation. Self help, meditation and self hypnosis share a basic element. You clear your mind and relax your body, then introduce the thoughts that you wish to incorporate in your life. There is nothing wrong with self help or meditation, but I think self hypnosis is quicker and more straightforward. There is no hocus pocus involved. And it works!
