The Obama administration struck a nerve by acknowledging that Fox News acts as an arm of the Republican party. It was not a surprise to anyone that Fox News has a conservative Republican agenda. The surprise was that the Democrats finally stopped treating it as if it were a legitimate objective news organization and exposed it for what it is.
Why did the Democrats finally out Fox News? Democrats need to expose it to public scrutiny because Fox News is actively trying to hurt and obstruct the Democratic party. It is an unabashed political opponent of the Democrats. Political leaders can't help the nation progress by allowing lies, misrepresentations of the facts, and spin to go unchallenged or even unacknowledged. To allow Fox to go unchallenged would be to implicitly legitimize it. Good political strategy is to meet your opponents head on.
How does Fox News promote the Republican party?
The main way that Fox News promotes the Republican party is by inserting conservative Republican spin and bias right into its news presentation. They present only the parts of the news that best promote their agenda. As they report a story, they paste words onto the screen that spin the story the way they want it to appear. They run crawlers with conservative slanted messages during the news. They present conservatives who comment on news stories, and these people spin it their way, right during the news! Inserting news opinion into ostensibly objective news reporting is dishonest, irresponsible, and is a disservice to the public it dupes.
Fox uses its network to promote the Republican politicians. It promoted Bush's failed policies, his wars, his doubling of the National Debt, the economic disaster his conservative Republican policies produced. They kept pushing these failed conservative Republican policies as the wars, debt, economic collapse and bankruptcies mounted up. Republican politicians avoided straight news organizations and fled to Fox's safe haven where they could avoid having to answer tough question about why conservative Republican policies went so wrong.
The Fox news website removes comments that express opposing viewpoints. A couple of months ago I posted a few comments to an article on their website. One comment briefly appeared, then disappeared. Future comments never even appeared. The number of comments for the article kept increasing then decreasing. That was puzzling until I realized that Fox News monitors its forums and removes all comments that do not promote the conservative and Republican agenda. I discovered that Fox News is NOT "fair and balanced" -- It censors it's own web site! This is the dead giveaway that FNC promotes conservative Republicans.
Here are some examples of how Fox News actively organizes for the Republican party:
They organize events for conservative Republicans. They organized and publicized events such as the tea parties and 9/12 gathering in Washington DC. They encouraged people to disrupt town hall meeting in August and they coached them how to disrupt by shouting and interrupting. Then they reported the events they produce as news stories during what is supposed to be news reporting, not opinion shows. During the primary season, the suggested that Republicans vote for Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary so that it would take longer for Obama to win the nomination.
Opinion talk shows:
Fox News has ONLY conservative talk shows, and they are VERY biased. They interrupt Democratic guests and spend an inordinate amount of time during those interviews promoting the conservative Republican agenda. On the other hand, they lob softball questions to conservative Republicans, and allow time them to speak. They give Republicans favorable comments and they don't challenge their responses.
Why should Fox news be exposed for what it is -- an arm of the Republican party?
Democracy depends on honest news reporting. People should know that the news they are getting is just that -- news -- and not news with a Republican slant or spin, not news that has been doctored or filtered. People should not have to view misleading news stories, or reporting that omits news stories that are unfavorable to the Republican agenda.
The people who laughably state that Fox News is the only "fair and balanced" channel and that all other news media are "liberal" make the mistake of thinking that the absence of a conservative agenda implies the presence of a liberal agenda. Fox News is so FAR to the right -- of course they think everything else looks like it is to the left!
More and more people have exposed Fox News. As they say, sunlight is the best disinfectant.
Why would any politician choose a disreputable and dishonest news media like Fox News when there are legitimate world class objective news media choices? And let's be honest, Fox News gets by just fine with its opinion shows. The fact that people now acknowledge that its NEWS REPORTING is also slanted to the right is not a shock to anyone. So let Fox play where it belongs, in the opinion and entertainment world. After all, it's not a REAL news organization. So it should be marginalized. It was right to expose it as an arm of the Republican party and to treat it as such.
